What We Do

HORACIO is a poet, translator and editorial reader. He has published three books, with a fourth to be published soon. He has also participated in collective writing projects.

As an editorial reader, he writes reports of readings of texts from Spanish, French and Italian for publishers, institutions and individuals.

NATHALIE is a translator and interpreter. Although both of these professions involve language skills, each requires a different set of skills.

 What exactly is the nature of this difference?

As an interpreter, NATHALIE speaks in another language to communicate what a speaker is saying in real time. This interpreting can be simultaneous—the kind generally done in a booth—or consecutive, where the interpreter jots down notes and translates when the speaker pauses. Most interpreting work requires being on site where a conference is taking place. Interpreting can also be done remotely, though this adds a layer of difficulty to the task.

 As translators, NATHALIE and HORACIO both write. The work of translation does not have the same level of urgency as interpreting and translators can take the time to reconcile the two languages before relaying the author’s words on the written page. In the case of works of literature, particularly poetry, this process is accompanied by an intense search for words that resonate in the target language.
